The Aurora Foundation is pleased to announce the continued partnership with CACI to hire veteran students for an eight-week internship program. Chris Weston, who graduated from George Mason University in December 2012 with his Bachelors in Global Affairs, began his internship shortly before finishing college, and completed it prior to beginning graduate school at GMU in January 2013. Aurora provided the funding for Chris’ internship and CACI provided the opportunity for him to work with the Veteran Support and Development Team, which focuses on assimilating, developing, supporting, and retaining veterans at CACI.
As with all Aurora interns, Chris briefed senior leaders at both Aurora and CACI on his experience. During his eight week program, he gleaned a better insight into the corporate world and how his military experience fits into it. He recognized the need for good mentors, and stated his commitment to sharing his experience with other veterans in his class. Working with his mentor at Aurora, Reggie Williams, he learned the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and had the opportunity to practice them.
Chris is the second Aurora intern to be placed with the CACI Veteran Development Program. He assisted with recruiting veterans and supporting efforts to better assimilate veterans into the workforce. Chris worked under the leadership of Director Carlton Kent, who is the 16th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, and Senior Manager Denyse Gordon, who served 12 years active duty with the Air Force and is going into her 9th year as a Reservist. Denyse is also the reigning Ms. Veteran America, a position that helps bring attention the needs of homeless female veterans.
At the reception held in Chris’ honor, Aurora’s Founder and Chairman, Tom DeWitt, presented him with Aurora’s Certificate of Completion, and he recognized CACI for their continued commitment to veterans entering the workforce. Chris also received a signed copy of Doomsday Iran: The Clock is Ticking, written by James G. Zumwalt, member of Aurora’s Board of Directors. In support of Aurora’s mission to enable student veterans to successfully graduate from college and enter the workforce, Aurora offers grants to higher education institutions to support the student veteran population. Aurora has given grants for faculty training and awareness of veterans issues, one-stop shop resources for veterans on campus, veteran-only curriculum, peer-to-peer mentorship, and other needs identified by schools. The Foundation also assists student veterans with the identification of full-time, paid internship opportunities in various fields and industries. Student veterans have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in their areas of interest and gain insight into the civilian workforce. To date, the Aurora Foundation has graduated interns in a variety of industries including National Security, Finance/Banking, Law, IT, and Marketing.
