On March 10th, 2017 the Aurora Board of Directors approved Aurora's 26th grant (the 16th in support of a Green Zone) to University of Wisconsin-Superior.
Mr. Monte Stewart, Coordinator of the Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center (VNSC) stated “the Green Zone program is a training program for faculty and staff designed to develop a campus community of support for student veterans and family members. Staff members will gain tools to enhance the overall college experience for student veterans and their family members so they may better guide and assist these students toward degree completion and the VNSC will contact each department to organize formal training times and sessions.”
He added, “We wish to address the retention of student veterans. The national average for student veteran retention is almost 10% lower than the average of their non-veteran peers. At UW-Superior in particular, the latest veteran retention rate for 1st and 2nd year is 60% and our student veteran graduate rate is only 36%.”
Tom DeWitt, President for the Foundation commented that “UW-Superior’s grant aligns perfectly with the mission of the Aurora Foundation. We are pleased to support their efforts in retaining their veteran students, helping them to graduate and enter the workforce.”
